The Set-Up
Long ago, a small but mighty humanoid kingdom existed in what is now the Storm Coast. Bugbear and ogre warriors fought brutal wars of expansion, earning great fame and amassing considerable fortunes from their predations. Those who died in battle were buried in large tomb complexes dug into hillsides and honored as patrons of the living. Among these tombs was the large tor known as Hightower. Though it was neither the largest nor the most famous of the kingdom's tombs, Hightower did represent a typical example of this kind of structure.

The cruel humanoid kingdom eventually fell to the Sea Queen. Her armies razed all its cities and outlying fortifications as the Lady of the Waves carved out her new realm. Of the tombs, only Hightower escaped destruction -- largely because it was an unimportant monument in a modestly remote location. A few tribes of humanoids that survived the devastation tried to use it as a fortress, but the humans with whom they clashed defeated them soundly. Since then, Hightower has served as a landmark for travelers in the know, but it has otherwise been largely forgotten.

You and your comrades are travelers in the know. Hightower looms atop its tor just to the west, which means you are the right road to reach Seawall, a small but prosperous trading town. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the weather is going to cooperate. Dark clouds roil in the sky, lit from within by near constant lightning. The electrical storms that give the Sea Queen's realm its name have plagued the area in recent days, and they have been quite severe. Neither man nor beast is safe out of doors during these storms. The first heavy, cold drops of rain start to fall. Hightower stares down at you, the only shelter for miles around.

Characters
I'm taking four players for an adventure set in and around the Storm Coast, a setting I'm pretty much making up as I go along.

Characters start at 1st-level with 450 gold to buy equipment (regardless of class). PH, PH2, Spell Compendium, DMG, Complete Adventurer, Complete Arcane, Complete Divine, Complete Warrior, Expanded Psionics Handbook, and the variant classes and races at d20SRD.org only are allowed. If you want to use an LA +1 race from ExPsiH, go for it. LA +1 is worth ignoring.

Use the elite array for ability scores: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8. Don't forget to apply racial adjustments. Maximum hit points at 1st level as normal. Characters start with 500 XP, none of which can be used for item creation before the game starts.

Good-aligned characters only.

House Rules to Pay Attention To
1. Armor bonuses do not add to AC. Instead, armor bonuses only convert lethal damage to nonlethal damage. For example, a chain shirt (+4 armor bonus) would convert 6 points of lethal damage into 2 points of lethal damage and 4 points of nonlethal damage.

2. Magical and psionic healing work differently. The variable heals only nonlethal damage. The fixed bonus (if any) heals only lethal damage. For example, a 1st-level cleric's cure light wounds heals 1d8 points of nonlethal damage and 1 point of lethal damage.

3. Turn undead works according to the Variant Turning Rules: Destruction of the Undead on p. 87 of the Complete Divine.

4. Add BAB to AC as a dodge bonus.

5. We use Invisible Castle for dice rolls.

N.B. This isn't necessarily first-come, first-serve, but you'd really have to be obtuse to not get considered (e.g., insisting on source material not listed above counts as obtuse). Also, the party will consist of five PCs. One slot is reserved for my son Giant Boy.

Interest So Far
Giant Boy: something clericy or bardy
Rhun: ranger or scout
Theroc: half-giant psychic warrior or fighter
HolyMan: wizard
Anton85: something druidy or beguilery

Rule system: d20
Allowed books: I only own the d20 modern core rule book. If you want to use additional sources, you'll have to find I way I can (legally) access to said content.
Character creation: Characters will be of level 6, an advanced class is highly recommended with 28 points. I'll like not to see submisions like: Smart 1/Strong 1/field reporter 1/Superman1/Spiderman 1. I think you get the idea =) I'll like to see simple characters, say: Strong 3/ Bodyguard 3 for example.
Background: This game will be heavy on the RP side, so if you dislike that side of games, or don't like to write a lot, step aside. An extensive background is a requirement. For extensive background I mean plenty of stuff for me to dig into and get plots, hooks, kickers, etc. I need a somewhat detailed psychological description of the characters, their goals and dreams, etc; anything you feel makes your character special.
I'll encourage you to make characters from different nationalities, you can link character backgrounds as you see fit, I encourage that. Characters don't have to be in a particular place, so start them where you wish.
Character will be above average people, going on their daily routine. They stand up as more capable on heir respective areas of expertise.

Game description:
* Invasion. Gathering of Heroes is fantasy settings that take place within an alternate reality. Although some parts of it may seem very similar to our own world, it is not the same. Some real-life celebrities and political figures exist within the setting, but they are not exact duplicates of those found in our own world, nor are they meant to be.

There are strange things happening, worldwide, that will each involve a character, or group of characters, and will link their destinies together, as they try to solve the mysteries that shroud the truth beyond these events.
The year is 1930 of our world, the date, February 5th.
Recent events in chronological order (to get you in chaacter):
-Stalin took the rule of USSR and formally collectivizes Russian farms
and creates farm cooperatives.
-Gandhi and small group of followers begin the Salt March, a march to the sea where he intends to manufacture salt in defiance of the British government monopoly on salt production
-China communists wait for their chance, as nationalist government is challenged by rivals in the North.
-The first diesel automobile trip is completed
-Alcapone shoots with the police forces. He and his band kills 14 policemen and take away.
-Scientists report discovery of ninth planet (Pluto) at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ
-New York Scientist predicts main will reach moon by 2050
-President Hoover says the worst effects of the Depression will be over within 90 days: "Prosperity is just around the corner"
-Drought has cut U.S. corn output 690 million bushels
- 500 Communist protesters dispersed from the US Capitol with tear gas. Police used deadly force, when Captain Smith suffered from a mental lapsus. He is being held at the capital's hospital. 45 civilians dead.
-President Hoover assassinated by a sniper on public conference. Vice President Curtis takes the lead of the nation
-U.S. Labor leaders move to ban all Soviet products; President Curtis denies, opening a trade rout for Soviet products.
-Nazis become second-largest party in Germany over communists; Hitler claims he would scrap Versailles treaty if in charge

I have decided to try my hand at running a 4ed PbP.

The Premise: The War of Usurpers has been raging on for years. In Cyre, her majesty the Queen employs every tool she can lay hands on to defend her realm and reclaim the Throne of Galifar to which she has the rightful claim: the Warforged of House Cannith, various Magebred creations from House Vadalis, the church of the Sovereign Host, mercenaries from abroad, and the heroes of her own country. One of the youngest of these heroes is her own son, Prince Oargev. He leads a brave band of adventurers loyal to him and to Cyre, doing what he can to help in the war effort.

You, the PCs, will be playing as Prince Oargev and his sworn companions. The first adventure will start when the Prince is barely 17 years old, sent on important, but supposedly safe, affairs of state.

Note on the Mourning: I am not afraid to change Eberron’s history to tell this story. The PCs all should believe in the success of Cyre, or at least the Prince—even when you, the players, know what approaches for Cyre.

This is not an anything goes, hodge-podge Eberron game, but most character ideas should work. I have identified a number of Archetypal Characters I want as my PCs, and list them below, along with how many I am willing to take into a party.

Character Submission
Sources: Any WotC 4ed source. No 3rd party sources. Follow your archetype.

1st level; 100 gp. While many characters will technically be richer than this, 100 gp represents what you have carrying around with you.

I need:
1. Which Archetype do you match?
2. 1 paragraph (3-8 sentences) backstory about how you met Prince Oargev and entered his service.
3. 1 paragraph (3-8 sentences) description (both physical and personality).
4. Character Sheet. Please either attach a Builder sheet or use the Summary format from character builder.
5. Magic items (level 2-10) you would be interested in seeing your PC obtain at some point. This locks you into nothing.
6. Which Paragon Path you’d maybe be interested in pursuing if the game makes it that far. This locks you in to nothing.

Selection
You will be competing against other people in your Archetype and other people in your Role. Also, I would like a fairly steady post rate (3-4 times a week maybe?) that picks up a bit in combat. We'll work out details beyond this when a list is posted.

Recruiting is closed.
Final selection will be made sometime Friday.

I want a Prince Oargev and 3-5 interesting companions for him. I want a well-rounded party. I want to provide a fun gaming experience for any and all involved.

Hi folks,

Is anyone here interested in giving a newcomer a shot as a DM? My circumstances are such that I don't have a face-to-face game available to me at present, due to family life and variable work schedule. I've been nosing around the web, looking for a place to take a shot at running a PBP game using Pathfinder rules. Having lurked here for a month or so, it seems that the folks here have a certain maturity and sense of strong community which many PBP boards lack. So, I've decided to give it a try.

I'd like to run the Paizo module Crypt of the Everflame, which is an introductory adventure for 1st level characters. I'm sure there will be questions about character creation rules and so forth, but for now, I'm just trying to see if there are some interested players who might like to give me a shot. As for my pedigree, I'm 36, married with two kids, and work in management. I've been playing and DMing Dungeons and Dragons (as well as many other PnP RPGs) for a whole lotta years now. I like role-playing interesting characters just as much as I like rolling dice and slaying monsters. Mostly though, I like the fun of gathering with friends for a game, and my hope is that maybe a group of us here could recreate a bit of that camaraderie, even if it is just through the computer screen.

If you want to know more about Crypt of the Everflame, here is the copy from the back of the module:

Spoiler:

The young heroes of the town of Kassen are ready for their coming-of-age ceremony, an old tradition in which they retrieve a piece of the eternal flame burning in the tomb of the town’s founder. Yet when they arrive there, they find only the corpses of their fellow townsfolk, dead bandits, and mysterious animated skeletons. The novice heroes must brave the traps and perils of the Crypt of the Everflame, discover the source of the corruption that has awakened an ancient evil, and defeat a menace that seeks vengeance against Kassen and its people.

Hopefully we can get four or five players interested in giving this a shot. I look forward to hearing from some of you. Thanks!

Hello All,

I'm the writer/designer of the newly released Nevermore campaign setting (see my signature for more details). I'm interested in running a PbP game using the 4e D&D rules coupled with the Nevermore rules. Since I haven't run a PbP game, I suspect there will be some growing pains involved, but I'm willing to learn.

At the moment, I am planning on running a 4e version of Big Trouble in Little Oaktown (a True20 adventure). Here's a blurb about the adventure:

Big Trouble in Little Oaktown takes place within a sleepy little hamlet with an otherworldly problem. The history of Oaktown has always had its tall tales and strange happenings. Some whisper that a door to the underworld exists nearby, while others recount stories of monsters walking the streets at night. However, over the past thirteen nights children have been dissappearing from their homes in the hamlet of Oaktown. After the last kidnapping a group of the missing a group of passing adventurers receive a mysterious dream. What does this dream mean? Where will it lead them? What will they find when they get there? These young heroes will soon discover the answers to these questions and many more as they unravel riddles, overcome obstacles, and face off with their foes in the unpredictable dreamlands.

This adventure introduces a group of heroes to the world of Nevermore and is intended for a party of four to six 1st level heroes.

Character Creation: You may create your own character using the 4e core rules (anything found in the D&DI Character creator is fair game). Characters will be built using standard point buy and will have 100gp to buy equipment. In addition, you will also need to purchase the Nevermore campaign setting book from Expeditious Retreat Press. You'll need it in order to learn the add-on rules (such as dreaming surges, aspects, etc.), finish building your character, and get a good feel for the campaign setting.

Please post a file of your character (pdfs prefered). If using the D&DI Character Builders, your character sheet should say legal under your portait.

Recruitment: If you are interested in joining this campaign, then post your character below. Please include a file of the character's 4e core rule and Nevermore-based stats, and a brief overview of your character's background. Your backgrounds can include some connection to Oaktown, including one of the missing thirteen children (sibling, niece, nephew, etc.).

Start Date: My current plan is to start Novemeber 30th (the week after Thanksgiving).

Frequency: A minimum of two-posts per week, preferably one post over the weekend and one more over the week. Some weeks we may slow down or speed up depending upon how busy life is for the group.

If you have any other questions (or if I missed something), then let me know and I'll get back to you ASAP.

You can also find more information about the Nevermore campaign setting via the FAQ and demo.

Character Details: Fenn was always a curious child, spending
much of his time experimenting with various chemicals and
measuring their effects on different kinds of metals and such.
It was a strange fantasy of his to imagine that he might one
day figure the secret of the philosopher's stone and turn lead
into gold. Most of the time, however, the freckled and red-
headed boy conducted his experiments for the meer joy of
applying his increasing knowledge and hands to his work. He
has become quite good with chemicals, except for that one
unfortunate time that he blew off the roof of his uncle's barn.
Fenn was caught in the explosion, which resulted in his
shortness of breath as his lungs were damaged, his slight limp,
and the scar along his neck and right cheek that took away some
of his boyish looks. Fenn healed up well enough, though he
seeks to apply his knowledge to something practical so he might
soon pay back his kind uncle for the damage he caused.

Number of Players: 4-5

The adventure finds the player characters in Anguran, the last desert stop on the grand east-west trade route. After serving a year in the all-female Isfala Guard, the PCs have mustered out of the Guard and wandered toward Anguran to sell-sword their way to the exotic lands of the Far East. Little do the PCs know that with each swill of date wine they take and each illicit kiss "stolen" from barmaids and bartenders all too willing, dark plans are being hatched that will alter their fate on this plane.

DM Note on The Pleasure Prison of the B'Thuvian Demon Whore: This is a relatively short 22-page module published by the excellent Expeditious Retreat Press. While the original module is intended for Krunk, a 7th-level barbarian of the frozen wastes and a "god among men," I have re-tooled the module for a party of four to five female players of 4th level. The adventure is intended to be campy, light-hearted, and fun. Due to the nature of XRP's writing contained within this specific module and my own tweaks to PC sex and certain module vignettes, at times the adventure may entertain themes of gender-bending sexuality. Out of respect for the public EN World gaming environment, overtly sexual scenes will be avoided by both the DM and players. We're looking for fun here, folks, not for an orgy.

Character Sex: Female only. Players can be female or male, but only female PCs will be accepted.

Point Buy: 15
Starting Level: 4th
Hit Points: Max at 1st level for your class, average for your class at each subsequent level.
Starting Gold: 6,000 gp. No one item may be worth more than 2,000 gp.
DM Gift to the party healer: Wand of cure light wounds, 40 charges.
Pantheon: Core Pathfinder deities
Alignment: No evil, CN will need a good backstory and must be accompanied by the intent to play well with others in the party.
Setting: Desert region in and around the city-state of Isfala. You can expect to spend some time traveling through the desert but more time underground. As far as I know, Isfala appears as a module-specific locale and is not part of a larger published setting.

Game Pace: Leisurely. I am a thorough DM but past experience has taught me that when I get too into D&D, I burn out. This game will therefore entertain periods of lulls in activity. If that's not for you, that's okay...but let this serve as fair warning.

Character Concept Submission Deadline: 9 November 2009. This is not a first-come-first-served game! You can do a full-on character concept that includes all the stats if you like, but it won't be necessary to do all that to be accepted to this game. I intend to hold one of the four spots for someone new to the EN World pbp environment. Preliminary things that I would like to see include: character name, race, class, alignment, primary weapon, and a rough estimate of feat and skill selection. Don't write a huge backstory--it won't see play in this game. If you don't have access to the Pathfinder Core Rulebook, don't sweat it. The Pathfinder RPG Game Reference Document is available for free HERE.

Players Considered:
Rhun -- human shield bash fighter
Shayuri -- gnome sorceress
rangerjohn -- elf druidess
Tailspinner -- human cleric of Sarenrae
Insight -- human rogue w/ social skills
It is at Anguran that the majority of the caravans stop and unload their goods to local merchants who take them to Kalik and eventually Isfala itself. Anguran is a rowdy town full of roustabouts and merchants, travelers and caravan guards. Its streets flow heavy with the luxurious local Date Wine as well as the local luxurious ladies-[and-men-]of-the-night. Which, if truth be told, are more like ladies-of-whatever-time-you-like in Anguran.

The Varaki River flows through the walls of Anguran and lowers the killing temperatures to merely brutal while providing a waterway for goods moving downriver to Kalik. Along the river, inn after inn and tavern after tavern ply their trade to the rough-and-ready who typically frequent Anguran."
What follows is copyright XRP, 2006. All text, inclusive of errors, is taken from the module. "At the mouth of the Baladeh River lies the city-state of Isfala whose shell-encrusted towers and gleaming mother-of-pearl twin fortresses shine in the reflected sunlight from Neytak Bay. Isfala is an old city, an old, old city with thousands of years of history and many more in legend. Isfala was the birth place of the great prophet Qu'Tun and has played an important role in spreading his word through the radical clerics of Isfala.

But don't expect the birth-place of the great prophet to be a holy city, far from it! It is a bustling cesspit of iniquity, where from one side of the mouth holy chants are incanted and through the other wine, lotus powder and the reluctant kisses of slaves pass. Isfala is a two-faced city at best, but truly it is a multifaced city willing to present whatever necessary to continue living in sin while commanding others not too [sic]. Anything a heart desires can be found in Isfala as it is the final stopping point of the vast east-west trade route moving weapons, armor, magic items, slaves, horses, camels, and jewelry.

But the most valuable commodity in Isfala is knowledge. The great sage college of Isfala trains the world's sages in knowledge ranging from the uses and meaning of the rudraksha bead to what blood is best for a gris-gris charm. Blue Domes, the local name of the sage college given by the bright blue domed minarets lining the walls of the campus, is the place to study for the 3rd sons across the civilized world.

But all of this focus on debauchery and knowledge has resulted in diminishing military control for the city-state. Now, after years of inward-focusing thoughts and actions, Isfala controls only the southernmost part of Neytak Bay and maintains its hold in the food producing lands solely out of a nigh-dormant sense of self-preservation. Isfala's grasp reaches inland only to the oasis communities of Kojur and Anguran, where loyalty to Isfala is sworn and mostly followed. But beyond the walls of Kojur and Anguran, a vast empty no-mans land stretches filled with slavers, traders, and humanoid tribes."

I'll change this initial post as my thoughts evolve...

Anyway, this is a bit of an experiment that I plan to run using 3.5e, some suspension of disbelief when it comes to historical events, a number of very short adventures from my personal collection, and The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer.

We'll start with 1st level characters from 3.5e and you can play any race, but with the caveat that you will have the option to consider some races still a human character but with a diverse background. So you might play an elf, but consider him for character purposes a Briton who happens to be slim, agile, and sees well enough in the dark. Or you can still play the elf and we'll make it that humans see the character as suspicious, but are not outright hostile. This is where the suspension of disbelief will come in, so bear with me.

For some reason, the characters are all in Damascus during the year 1386 and will making a two year pilgrimage through Europe and to Canterbury Cathedral. The leader of the caravan is a rich merchant, and he knows all the trade locations to journey to as he's made this journey several times. The other characters will have diverse backgrounds and faiths, as the route travelled is a known trade route with more open-minded populations. Some characters will be religious pilgrims, some diplomats, some traders, some soldiers for hire to defend the long caravan, and so on.

The adventures will all be chosen from the WOTC website and from Penumbra's En Route series. Because of the shorts and the caravan journey, we will be able to swap out characters seemlessly as they will have a mobile base of operations. Therefore, there will not be an overall plot hook.

Anyways, let me know if you like the idea. All books, classes, and races allowed, but I can shoot anything down if I think it is unbalanced.

Honor system, roll three characters, 4d6 and drop the lowest and reroll 1s, then take the best of the three characters rolled. 125 gp each.
