It seems as if the shift is towards making giants humanoid types which Giant as a subtype, which is a change from 3.5.

One issue that does come up from this is that now giants creatures can have the enlarge person spell cast on them, making them REALLY big, along with their weapon. This could be a big problem in efforts to have large size PCs stay reasonably balanced.

I'm trying to understand the real mechanical difference between the Dwarf's stonecunning trait and the normal perception skill.

PFSRD details for Stonecunning:

Dwarves receive a +2 bonus on Perception checks to potentially notice unusual stonework, such as traps and hidden doors located in stone walls or floors. They receive a check to notice such features whenever they pass within 10 feet of them, whether or not they are actively looking.

PFSRD for Perception:

Perception is also used to notice fine details in the environment. The DC to notice such details varies depending upon distance, the environment, and how noticeable the detail is.

Action: Most Perception checks are reactive, made in response to observable stimulus. Intentionally searching for stimulus is a move action.

--

Now, when you compare both of them it sounds like the Stonecunning "auto-check" with perception isn't significantly different from any character simply using Perception to be reactive to stone features in the environment.

It comes across as more of a thematic interpretive element for the GM. A dwarf will absolutely get a perception check under the right conditions, whereas a non-dwarf might get a perception check, or they might need to take a move action to get a perception check. It just comes down to how the GM is looking at the situation.

The content is pretty straightforward. Two of the four panels enumerate skill modifiers. The third has the conditional modifiers right at hand (to quickly let me know the mechanical differences between nauseated and sickened, for instance. :)) as well as AC and attack roll mods. The fourth panel lists hardness values for objects, armor and weapons as well as the XP award chart and expected treasure values per encounter.

I can't wait to have the hardcover-grade physical product in my hands to check the heft for myself.

What does your Pathfinder game and game world look and feel like?

Just curious about how people are running their Pathfinder games. As an oldschooler I do believe that their is a Batman/Spiderman analogy that works well with describing how a game plays out. Batman being the older style of play where life is a lot dicier for a player and Spiderman as an example of more modern play in which a character has a few more buffers between themselves and a screaming death. Sometimes, you want to be Spiderman and there is not a thing wrong with that.

My game is very much inspired by Clark Ashton Smith, Lord Dunsany and J.R.R. Tolkien. The world is in its Second Age and is still a time of wonder and magic. I don't believe in having just one evil dark lord, so I plot out several at a time, their messengers, heralds and harbingers sometimes cross paths and agendas to make life a bit more challenging for the players.

Currently an ogre magi and his small army of goblins have taken up residence in an old wizard's tower in the north of the region where the characters are. Basically he is looking for ways to become a summoner and call up creatures and entities from the lower planes. His goblins are spies and scavengers, keeping an eye on the comings and goings of nearby settlements and trying to look inconspicuous. As the ogre magi develops, I am giving the players time to figure out what is going on. This is complicated by an elven king driven insane by contact with a Lovecraftian god-thing and a bardic deity that is not quite all there himself and whose musical magic sometimes creates webs that are tough to break free of.

I have an elven ranger, a dwarf ranger, a human rogue and a dwarf sorcerer of the aberrant bloodline. My daily oldschool blog makes an appearance with Pathfinder-ized versions of some of the entries. Our group of mainly oldschoolers is having fun with Pathfinder.

Words Endure

The big old farm house smelled of rich meals, dust, and mountain breezes. The roof timbers had long lines of engraving, in elvish, thanking the forest for her trees and wishing good fortune on the family hearth. Radwe sat easily among these timbers, clearing dust and renewing the prayers.
She had come across the homesteader, carefully gathering fallen timber. He was a bear of a man with a mop of deep brown hair, broad shoulders and a ready laugh. Radwe liked him and his pudgy wife. They made her feel safe and accepted. Radwe helped them pick the house location, build fences and eventually, the house. He was an amazing man, and they filled the house with laughter and hope.
Carefully, she adjusted a small oval window marked “RADWE” in large rough letters. The window had been a gift. With a wet rag she wiped years of soot from the little glass lens. Radwe lavished attention on the little portal. “This is your window, you can always look to the forest and be ready to go any time you want and here's a door key so you're never locked out."
The small window sparkled but she could see no forest, only a spreading countryside of farms and villages.
Finally with a whispered incantation the last of the prayers glowed for an instant, shed its dust and recovered years of neglect. “I'm almost done here.” She called down.
“Oh thank you! We could never have climbed all the way up there!. Said a man by the hearth.
She let herself down to the room below with practiced confidence and familiarity.
“You have your father's strength Jason! You've done wonders with the place. I appreciate you letting me set some things right for you. Your dad and I... Well your dad always wanted this place to be the best it could be.”
Behind Jason a slim woman held her child protectively. “I thank you, Elf, for whatever you did..” Jason's wife knew nothing of rafters and carved prayers and almost nothing of elves.

“Radwe, I still can't believe its really you!”
“Well it is, I'm sorry I didn't come sooner... very sorry.”
There was an awkward silence in the room.
“Jason, can I talk to you for a moment alone?”.... It was Jasons wife.
Radwe looked at the child hiding in his mothers skirts. His hair had a familiar shade of deep brown but everything else about him was unrecognizable. He was thin, not broad. He had his mothers features. “He's afraid of Strangers” his mother had apologized. Still, the child was healthy enough.

“Don't worry. Jason I really have to go again...”
“But you just got here?”

“I'm sorry but I saw something from that window, I can't stay.”

….

Later, Radwe climbed the quiet path to see her homesteader.

“Your, great grandson, is well and the house is secure.” she said with tenderness. “but I don't think they care very much about the forest.”
Then she took the small brass key from her pouch and buried it by his headstone.

The lock had probably changed anyway.

We're switching some of our 3.5 campaign to pathfinder and our paladin in the group really likes the pathfinder abilities.

Do the recipients of the Aura of Justice retain the smite abilities if they go more than 10 feet away from the Paladin?

Does the paladin also gain the ability to smite from Aura of Justice or just her allies? Does she need to expend another smite for herself?

Is a facing supposed to be established and then movement occurs? When you make a 45 degree turn are you turning the figure to face the corner square? What happens to the facing when you go into the diagonal square, does it "snap to grid" again in the generally forward position, or do you finally turn so that you are in fact making a 90 degree turn, but with just a bit of diagonal movement to begin with?

I've started a new campaign with pathfinder classes and rules lately, and I've really liked the changes so far. However, I also want to use some Incarnum rules, so I've been toying with converting some of the Incarnum using classes for pathfinder rules.

I had a player who wanted to make a rogue/shadowdancer, and I suggested the Umbral Disciple class to him since it is pretty similar flavor wise, but with some different abilities. Here's my attempt at converting it to Pathfinder rules. I also filled in some of the ability gaps, so I borrowed some abilities from the Pathfinder shadowdancer (shadow master and shadow illusion specifically, along with evasion and improved evasion). I also increased the hit dice to D8 from D6 of course.

I'd be interested in hearing people's thoughts on this conversion. Part of my reasoning behind some of these changes is that I wanted to give the class a few abilities which weren't totally reliant on the player putting Essentia into them first, though I'm worried shadow illusion is a little tacked on. Oh, and I also adjusted the flavor of the abilities a bit because in my campaign incarnum will be more of a power of creation than soul energy, you can feel free to ignore that (renamed Step of the Bodiless to Step of Shadows for example). I also left out Sept Knowledge because he'll be the first Umbral Disciple ever in my campaign....so he wouldn't have a Sept to join, lol.

Class Information

The following information pertains to the Umbral Disciple advanced class.
Hit Die: d8
Requirements

To qualify to become a Umbral Disciple, a character must fulfill the following criteria.
Skills: Perception 5 ranks, Spellcraft 2 ranks, Stealth 5 ranks, Knowledge (arcane) 2 ranks
Essentia Pool: 1.

Class Skills
The Umbral Disciple’s class skills are as follows: Acrobatics, Climb, Diplomacy, Knowledge (arcana), Stealth, Perception, Profession, Sense Motive
Skill Points at Each Level: 6 + Intelligence modifier.

 Class Features

The following features pertain to the Umbral Disciple advanced class.

Evasion (Ex): At 1st level, an umbral disciple gains evasion. If exposed to any effect that normally allows her to attempt a Reflex saving throw for half damage, he takes no damage with a successful saving throw. The evasion ability can only be used if the umbral disciple is wearing light armor or no armor.

Step of Shadow: Starting at 1st level, you being learning to use incarnum to shape shadows and give them mass. With this ability, you can manipulate the shadows which are around you and at your feet to give yourself a +2 bonus on any acrobatics or climb checks for every point of essential you invest in this class feature.

Embrace of Shadow(Su): Starting at 3rd level, you can weave incarnum into an obscuring shadow that clings to you, providing you with a limited amount of concealment. While you are thus cloaked in shadow, each attack made against you has a 10% miss chance per point of essentia invested in this ability. The miss chance does not stack with miss chances provided by any other ability or effect. If the miss chance granted by this ability is 20% or higher, you also gain the ability to hide in plain sight – that is, you can use the Hide skill even while being observed. See the ranger class feature. Embrace of shadow is usable at will.

Shadow Illusion (Sp): When an umbral disciple reaches 4th level, he can create visual illusions. This ability functions as silent image, using the umbral disciple’s level as the caster level. An umbral disciple can use this ability once per day for every two umbral disciple levels he has attained. The DC for this ability is Constitution-based.

Sight of the Eyeless(Su): At 6th level, you begin to be able to sense things through the shadows themselves to perceive what would otherwise be hidden. Investing essential in this ability grants you the blindsight ability (range 10 feet per point of essentia invested). Sight of the eyeless is usable at will.

Soulchilling Strike(Su): At 8th level, you can imbue your melee attacks with a soulchilling essence. For every point of essentia you invest in this ability, your attack deals 1 point of strength damage to the target (fortitude negates, DC10 + invested essentia + your Con modifier) in addition to soulchilling effect. If you are making a full attack, the effects is delivered by your first successful attack of the round, and the rest of your attacks are resolved normally. This effect applies to all types of melee attacks made while essential is invested, regardless of whether natural or manufactured weapons are used.

Kiss of the Shadows(Su): At 9th level, you learn to wield the shadows themselves as your weapons. Tangible, incarnum-laced shadows of your weapons or fists follow your every strike, mirroring your attacks at a range. Your reach increases by 5 feet for every point of essential invested in this class feature, but only on your turn. While this ability is active, you are treated as if you were standing in the square adjacent to the target that is closest to your actual location for the purpose of flanking, attacking from higher ground, or similar situations. At the end of your turn, your reach (and thus the area you threaten, returns to normal.

Improved Evasion (Ex): This ability, gained at 10th level, works like evasion (see above). An umbral disciple takes no damage at all on successful saving throws against attacks that allow a Reflex saving throw for half damage. What's more, he takes only half damage even if he fails her saving throw.

Shadow Master (Su): At 10th level, whenever an umbral disciple is in an area of dim light, he gains DR 10/— and a +2 luck bonus on all saving throws. In addition, whenever he successfully scores a critical hit against a foe who is in an area of dim light, that foe is blinded for 1d6 rounds.

What about the adventure paths? I'm looking at Curse of the Crimson Throne, Legacy of Fire, and Council of Thieves right now and wondering if its worthwhile to invest in all three (I realize new characters will be needed for each), or if any stand heads above the others.

I like paizo alot, and I have abandoned WotC because I've decided I don't like 4e, or how they killed FR (part 2 would have just made me stop buying FR products). Why I do or don't like 4e is not the purpose of this thread, however, the point is that I now buy almost everything from Paizo (with a small amount of White Wolf and 3rd party OGL stuff).
That said, I have alot of pathfinder path books and the PFRPG rules and Bestiary.
That being said, there are a number of things I would like to see from Paizo at some point, and maybe if they see these, they may say to themselves: "Hmm that might be a good Idea! Lets make it!". Then I can spend my money buying them. :)

Below are a list of things I would LOVE to have paizo put out.

Some of them are things I feel I need enough that I've been making bits and pieces of them myself as I need them for my home games.

Setting Neutral
1. > A Steampunk book: give me gadget making, and airships, and rules for building robot constructs, and a techmage of some sort, and base and prestige classes matching the concept, and firearms no newer than the revolver (Flintlocks are very nice).
OGL Steampunk (3.0) by Mongoose Press is the best one I've seen, but it was still lacking in alot of ways and I think that the nice people at Paizo could do better.
2. > I'd like a monstrous characters book, but I have savage species, and it was a disappointment. I'd say a PF one would be good, but it would all depend on how they approached it. Unless they were set up in a way like Arcana Evolved Races (or World of Warcraft RPG races). I'd be looking for everything from lizardfolk to djinn to solars (everything with hands, and an int higher than 6, basically). I'd also be interested in similarly done templates, with templates ranging from no level change, through template levels until you have the whole template. I'd be willing to get it in periodic installments too, but I wouldn't buy it if it wasn't done right.
3. > Numbers PDF: Something like UK's CR rules, for how you did things in pathfinder. A book explaining why you designed things the way you did, with numbers weighing the value of things to explain what theyre worth, and that sort of thing. I'd especially like some kind of feat-point system, wherein less valuable feats are assigned smaller point costs, and more valuable feats more point costs, so if you take a less powerful feat, you'll have extra points when you go to take your next feat.
4. > Animals: Monster Manuals, possibly just 32 or 64 page installments, with animals in them. Maybe sort them by climate. I know some were in the bestiary, but there were alot that were not. I ran a game last week and needed a viper, and had to search for my 3.5e MM after realizing there were no medium vipers in the Bestiary. But I'd love a 32 page book of different wild cats, from bobcats to tigers to smilodon. Another one on dinosaurs. Another one on domesticated animals (3-4 dog breeds, etc). Apes, Herd animals, whatever. Situations come up where animals are useful.
I'd prefer the animals separate from the monsters, honestly. I don't want to wade through animals to find monsters. Likewise I don't want to wade through monsters when I need a Rhino. Feel free to include dire animals with regular animals, theyre close enough. Or things like blink dogs, winter wolves, wargs, shadow mastiffs, Or 15 foot spiders. That's fine. Just separate them from trolls and demons and whatnot.

Golarion Specific
1. > Adventure Paths & Other Setting-Specific Crunch Details updated to PFRPG (Would save me a hell of alot of work, even just as errata documents, I'd appreciate just stat blocks updated for NPCs and Monsters)
~Yes I can do it myself, but a Level 6 NPC takes me like, 4-5 hours, if you count the document formatting, and the time it takes to update.
So Far I've done Lavender Lil. We're running Second Darkness. As mentioned, it would save me alot of prep work.
3. > Adventure Path Creature Folios. Like the Map Folios. Put each NPC or Monster on it's own page, separate from the modules, with the same pretty picture, the same fluff, but the crunch in the PFRPG ruleset not in 3.5e. Don't put multiple monsters on the same page, or multiple non-generic NPCs on the same page. Riddleport thief and Riddleport thug can obviously be the same page.
2. > Monsters of Golarion: Just the occasional 32 or 64 page issue filled with the monsters from adventure paths and modules.
3. > Traits: It would be nice if they weren't so spread out and hard to find. It's like, every book has one or two, which, while it works for adventure path specific ones, the more generic ones, or the racial ones or religious ones, etc, would be nice to have together. Saves me from either listing the pages/books or compiling them myself.
4. > Something I'd love that isnt likely to happen:
Encyclopaedia Golarionica: A "Campaign Setting", with all the detailed information from basically everything you guys published, from creatures, to important living NPCs, to All the Detailed cities, to Country and racial stuff, to gods and planes, basically everything except for the actual plots, though have a history of Golarion timeline which lists important events from the adventure paths and such (as well as novels if you do novels).
Yes, I want the big 2000 Page Golarion Bible (when there is enough stuff to put in it). I'm aware that it would likely cost 200+ Dollars. If you make it, I will buy it. If you make it as a website/computer program, I will use it/buy it. If you have a PDF, I'll get the pdf, but if I paid 200+ $ for the hardcopy (which I would cause I'm like that) I'd want a key in the book to get a pdf(charge a lil extra and basically give the pdf away to people who bought the hardcover, make each key attach to a user account)) to

(I'd buy an FR one, or Ravenloft too if it covered 1e, 2e and stopped at the end of 3.5e ~ lol) > but Hasbro isn't going to do that one.
