Welcome back to part three of the Pathfinder Adventure Path: "Rise of the Runelords", "The Hook Mountain Massacre".

The first part of this adventure, Burnt Offerings, spawned an 1100+ post thread, and took about 10 months to complete. The full thread is here, for those who wish to review what has gone before.

The second part of this adventure, The Skinsaw Murders, was even more sprawling in nature, taking just short of 14 months to complete and over 1200 posts. It can be viewed for posterity at this link .

And so we move on to a new thread to mark part three of the Rise of the Runelords adventure path. We will be continuing with the existing cast, but we have decided to convert to Pathfinder RPG for this, and future adventures in the path

So far the cast of players and characters have survived the assault of a crazy gang of goblins driven by a woman turned to demonic madness by her haunted past. They took the battle to the goblins, burnt their stronghold to the ground, and stopped a horrific evil that was lurking beneath the very streets of Sandpoint.

Then they were called in to help solve a truely barbaric sequence of murders. They uncovered a ghast and his ghoul minions, an old acquaintance, had been driven to build an army of ghouls. They tracked him down to his mansion, and put an end to him and the evil that lurked there. Clues led them to Magnimar, where they uncovered and defeated some great evil that seemed to be intent of driving countless murders to fuel some great slumbering evil. It was not without cost though, for they tasted death, and very nearly tasted defeat.

The doyens of Magnimar and Sandpoint, the heroes took a well deserved rest. They found that rest boring, and worse ... it made them realise that the frenzy of their lives, and their new found role as heroes, did not really offer them any easy avenues back into a comfortable life. Anxious to do something of some purpose, the heroes once again met up in Magnimar.

And so starts part 3...

---

Our characters are:

Jokad The Reaver, Shoanti Human, Shadde Quah - Axe Clan Barbarian, Level 6, Ranger, Level 1. Played by Frostrune

Kael Saern, Human (Varisian), Sorcerer, Level 6, and his faithful familiar Mal. Played by Friadoc

The Out of Character thread will continue in the same place as the old one.

While I continue to allow minimal OOC chat in the IC thread with a clear "OOC" tag, I would like to keep this to a minimum, with most, if not all, OOC chat posted to the OOC thread.

The first IC game-post will follow tomorrow...

The hearthfires of two stone fireplaces provide a welcome glow to the Seven Silvers taproom, and a ward against the chill winds which blow briskly outside. It is the the 3rd of Neth, and the evening before the big day to follow...the launch of the Quest of the Everflame. Tonight, Mariana Silvers has been given the evening off from her usual duties at the Seven Silvers in order to relax and make preparations for her departure on the morrow. Asina, scurrying by with a tray full of dirty mugs and plates, sticks her tongue out at her elder sister in mock resentment.

From his stool on the other side of the bar, Short Change catches Mariana's eye and gives her a wink and a smile. Over the din of the crowded room, the halfling calls out, "Hey now, don't look so nervous lass, you'll be just fine. You'll be in good company, what with that brickhouse of a blacksmith's apprentice, Holgast's pointy-eared pupil, and of course, your fire-hearted Corus. And, after all, it's not like you haven't picked up a trick or two of your own from somewhere or t'other. Mayor Uptal even hinted there might be a fifth person on your little trek, did he not? You've nothing to worry about, except p'rhaps a cold dinner if the rest don't get here soon." A call for another round at the bar diverts Short Change's attention, leaving Mariana to watch the door and wait for her friends and companions to arrive.

OOC: Alright, here we go. This meeting in the tavern is a chance for the fledgling heroes to get to know one another a bit better, and get some role-playing in before the sending-off ceremonies of the next day.

Volume 1: The Last War
Book 1: Blooded
Chapter 1: The Queen's Summons.

The summons came on a beautifully handwritten scroll, delivered by a messenger in the queen’s own livery.

You are hereby summoned to a command audience before her majesty, Queen Dannel of Galifar, regent of Cyre, Protector of the Realms of Khorvaire. You are to arrive one hour before sundown at the chamber of her majesty’s small council.

You’ve made what preparations you can, and, arriving a little early, have found Prince Oargev and the others he has asked to join him on his task-force of state waiting in the antechamber. A pair of warforged guards flank the door, each holding a long, ornate glaive. No-one knows exactly what this summons is about, but based on those who have arrived, it seems clear that the Queen has decided to assign you all your first mission.

The antechamber is a well-appointed room with a few plush couches, a sturdy, ornate bench, and many scattered ottomans and chairs. There is a sideboard where a butler offers you wine or water. The wines are a fine Aundarian White, and a rich, dark Q’barran red.

ooc

You have time to talk here in the antechamber. I’ll interrupt your conversations when I finish the next post tomorrow or Wednesday sometime.

Originally established by the Cerulean Empire as a fortress outpost to combat the threat posed by bandits and wandering tribesmen who inhabited the area, the keep at Ermetn on the River Choha and its surrounding environs (Map Book, Page 14) were gifted to the hero Vital Harper in the year 1894 RE for his slaying of the Fell Beast menacing the city of Huam, to the East. Vital brokered a number of treaties with the local tribesmen, offering them the promise of peace in exchange for shared use of the surrounding lands. Under the guidance of Vital, both the local tribesmen and Ermetn prospered. A small village grew up around the keep, the local tribes benefited from the protection of the Harpers, and all was well.

In the year 1934 RE, under the leadership of Vital Harper's decendant, Sighard Harper, much of the land surrounding Caer Ermetn was leased to the Cerulean Miner's Guild in exchange for a share in the profits produced by any mines that they established. This arrangement violated many of the treaties brokered by Vital Harper and, ultimately, provoked a series of coordinated raids on the village at Ermetn by once loyal tribesmen living in the area. With help from the Cerulean Empire the threat was quickly quelled and those responsible were forced out of their homes and off of the land leased to the Guild. In the following years, infrequent raids on Ermetn continued.

Despite the unfortunate politics of the arrangement with the Miner's Guild and the bloodshed that followed it, the lease agreements allowed the village of Ermetn to become a bustling center of commerce and an important trade nexus of the Empire when it was discovered that several very rich veins of silver ran under the Harper lands. During the conflict between Bhamotin and the Cerulean Empire (1944-1963 RE), these veins of silver proved a crucial source of revenue for the Cerulean Empire, though Ermetn itself remained militarily neutral during the conflict.

When Sighard Harper took ill in 1968 RE, control of Ermetn fell to his second son Eadric, as his first son had dissapeared when adventuring in the East. Eadric did his best to make reparations to the tribes that remained in the area, opting not to renew mining leases on their land when the time came. This action strained relations with the Mining Guild but successfully reestablished peace with the remaining tribes in the area, much to the relief of Ermetn citizens and tribesmen alike. When Sighard passed on in 1967 RE, Eadric was formally appointed the ruler of Ermetn.

Today, Eadric still rules the freehold of Ermetn, though the city's growth has slowed due to diminishing returns from the mines still being operated and the recent reported sightings of goblins in the area. Bowing to pressure from the Mining Guild, Eadric has begun offering a 6GP/month wage to any who are willing to patrol the hills North and West of the city where the most productive mines operate. Additionally, Eadric has put out a call for able-bodied men to serve as proper soldiers in anticipation of possible goblin raids, as the Cerulean Empire has made it clear that they are not willing to commit many troops to the defense of the city given Eadric's current poor standing with the Mining Guild.

As our first chronicle begins, Winter in Ermetn has turned to Spring and, with the coming of the thaw, reports of goblin activity to the North and West of the city have increased. To make matters worse, Eadric has reason to believe that the Ceruleans have infiltrated spies into his community with the intent of assessing Ermetn as a possible jumping off point for another attack on Bhamotin, an untenable position for the young Harper, who wishes to maintain the freehold's history of military neutrality. With political tension growing and a possible monstrous threat lurking in the nearby hills, Ermetn is primed for adventure. Our heroes have answered the call. . .

The world called Gaia is very much like our Earth was in the early part of the 19th century... except, of course, that Gaia boasts the presence of magic, faeries, dragons, and other supernatural wonders. One of Gaia's continents, Arcadia, is a land of many nations, most of them in the midst of an Industrial Revolution and an explosion of modern scientific understanding and technological development. Driven by coal and steam, clockwork and electricity, the world is changing with breathtaking rapidity. Some of the elder races, especially long-lived elves and fays, can't quite wrap their heads around this new world being created by men, gnomes, dwarves, and other races more technologically inclined.

In the center of Arcadia is a country called Midjard, the middle-country, a region of several small and independent kingdoms. Some of these kingdoms are well known and rather powerful. Spielberg is famous for its military, and Handelstad is famous for its wealth. Daemmerung is known for the power of its wizards, and Aelfheim for the wisdom of its sages. But the kingdom of Dreiseen (which is known in the Common Tongue as the kingdom of Threelakes) is not particularly outstanding for any of these reasons. In fact, it is quite the out-of-the-way little region, populated by farmers and fishers, and so far, little touched by the marvels of modern technological progress.

In the western part of Dreiseen is a lowland, a large valley some twenty miles wide running east-west and perhaps eighty miles long running north-south. This valley is known as the Donnerreiss (the Thunder-Rift). Much of the Donnerresiss is wilderness. There are no cities, only a few villages, and many rough and rugged parts which rest in monster hands. It is into the wilds of the Donnerreiss that your party has ventured, looking for excitement and profit. Your first destination: the village of Kleine, on the southern shore of Lake Oestrel. A massive waterfall called the Donnerfall (its pervasive roar gives the whole valley of the Donnerreiss its name) plunges into Lake Oestrel, after which a lazy flow called the Drache River wends down from the lake (about where Kleine sits), and then southward through the valley and eventually all the way to the mighty Gylden River, at the very southern edge of the Kingdom of Dreiseen, many leagues distant.

You arrive in Kleine on a crisp autumn morning, brown leaves crunching beneath your feet, frost coating the tips of grass-blades, wisps of your own breath made visible for a heartbeat. The sky is blue and cloudless, the sun bright. And yet, you come to this village well aware of the rumors. Trouble stirs in the east. Homesteads destroyed, crops and possessions pillaged, farmers and their families either slain or kidnapped or force to flee. And some claim to have seen goblins in the hills. Goblins! Above ground, and in broad daylight at times! Such a thing is unheard of, even in such a wilderness as the Donnerreiss. After all, goblins are things of legend. At least as far as any of you know, nobody has seen a real goblin in hundreds and hundreds of years. It's possible that they might not even exist at all, and that the farmers are merely jumping at shadows. Or perhaps the threat is real, but farms are being destroyed by ordinary, mortal bandits, and not by spooks and myths and legends.

Whatever the case, you have come to Kleine in search of adventure. This village is little more than a crossroads and a collection of small buildings, most of them sturdy and tile-roofed, but still very rustic in appearance and construction. The roads are dirt-paved, and there isn't even so much as a lamppost in the village square! Just a stone well where the two dirt highways intersect. But one building does stand out beyond the others, a large and relatively new-looking three-storey home. This, you suppose, must be the burgomaster's manor.

But surely, the leader of a village like Kleine would be too busy to meet with a ragtag band of adventurers, right?

In your travels you have recently found yourself in the Town of King's Gate; also derisively known as Scargate to the locals.
King's Gate was originally a Military outpost set up to guard the entryway to the Chaos Scar; the tumultuous land that lies beyond the King's Wall.
But due to it's location near the crossing's of some trade routes, King's Gate turned from a simple outpost to something of a frontier town; ripe with opportunity.

You can see however another reason why they call it Scargate besides it's proximity to the Chaos Scar; for it truly is a blemish on the landscape.
Most of the buildings are hastily constructed affairs made of uneven wooden planks and during the day a veritable sea of dirty tents are erected and dozens of merchants, gypsies, and peddlers hawk their wares.

The only permanent looking structure is a squat, sturdy looking building made of stone blocks and mortar that stands upon a small hillock. It was the original fort that housed the small militia of King's Men, and it flies the King's Flag still, though it now houses the local Constable and his men.

While in the center of the Market you see the Constable, one Unther Ironhelm; a dwarf with a long red handlebar mustache that frames a wirey salt & pepper beard, hammer up a notice on a large shodden post.

It reads;

REWARD...REWARD
King's Constable seeking Mercenary types
to hunt and kill Bandits along the King's Road.
FIVE GOLD BOUNTY
for reasonable proof of each Bandit's demise.

This thread is for players in the [d20 Apocalypse] After the Blast campaign only. Others may feel free to lurk. If you would like to discuss the campaign, anyone is welcome to join us in the OOC thread (see signature).

Rules for Posting in this Thread
1) Please do not post OOC comments on this thread (that is what the OOC thread is for).
2) All players must fill out the title section for each post. The title section should include your character's name, current hit points/max hit points, plus any conditions currently affecting the character such as: Daniel Stokes, 32/45 hp, dazed.
3) Describe actions and spoken words only. Do not describe thoughts unless you use spoiler tags as these should be for GM's eyes only (there might be someone with psionics around reading thoughts). In any event, you are not required to post your character's thoughts unless I ask you to.
4) When posting spoken words, be sure to use bold type and colored font. There are only eight choices available for colored font: red, dark orange, yellow, lime, dark slate blue, cyan, blue and purple. Color choice is first-come, first-served, and once you choose a color, you cannot switch to a different one. If a player drops from the game or flakes out, his/her color will become available for use for new players only. Existing players must continue to use their old color.
5) Use InvisibleCastle for all of your rolls. You will need an InvisibleCastle account in the name of your character or your EN World screen name. If you choose to use your EN World screen name, you will need to include your character name in the notes of each roll. Whenever you make a roll, simply link back to the roll in your post using a URL tag. Add in all applicable bonuses and/or penalties to your roll on InvisibleCastle to save time.
6) Choose when to use an action point at the time you make the roll. If it does not look like a good enough roll at the time you make the roll, and you wish to add an action point, make an action point roll immediately afterwards and link to the action point beneath the roll. Don't worry. I can do simple addition. Once you have submitted your post, it will be too late to add an action point.
7) At the beginning of each combat, roll five d20s. I will use these throughout the battle, although I will make most of the other rolls (such as damage rolls) myself. If any of the rolls look low enough that you want to add an action point to them, the beginning of the battle is when you should do it. If for some reason you do not end up using that roll, the action point will not be spent. When you are down to two d20s, I will have you roll up five more.
8) At the beginning of each combat round, post a priority of three main actions in case your turn comes up and your primary action is no longer necessary. For instance, if you choose to attack a gang leader with your pistol on your initiative of 10 but one of your allies takes the gang leader down on initiative of 13, you should have two backup actions to perform, such as, aiding someone stabilizing one of your fallen allies, gathering up dropped weapons and ammo, and so forth. List them in priority order with 1) being your primary objective, 2) being your secondary objective, and 3) being your tertiary objective.
9) Please do not post in this thread until you have received permission to post your character in the Rogue's Gallery (see signature).
10) Please do not edit your post without requesting my permission on the OOC thread. If I see a post has been edited and includes an action point, I will disregard the action point and consider it unspent. Again, you must decide whether or not to add an action point to a roll before you submit your post.

Kail has left the small group still remaining at the table--Druthruss, Pier, and the rugged Vatan--a token--a cold arrow--to take back to the barbarian tribes of Hallowdale in honor of his fallen King Lolgoff.

The nights are growing colder. The strange Witchlights hang in the horizon, and the eastern savage races are growing restless.

The journey to Hallowdale will not be an easy one.

In the dead of night, the party waits, both eager for and fearful of the approach of daylight and what it may bring.

The night passes without incident - only the beating of hearts and the intake of breath can be heard in the deepest darkness.

As light approaches, the party rouses itself. As expected, a search appears to be on - just barely visible beyond the trees, a small group of men - perhaps a dozen - appear to be performing a methodical sweep near the compound that was the scene of the fighting the night before.

The party creeps slowly away, careful to remain concealed in the far-away trees. A few minutes later, another search party comes into view from the north - it appears to be the same size as the first, and joins up with it. Mere seconds later, a third party comes from the south to join up with the other two.

The entire spectacle seems rather abstract and distant for a while, until the combined enemy force, a few dozen strong, forms up, turns vaguely in the direction of the party, and begins to move. Your hearts, human and otherwise, begin to pick up speed themselves as it becomes apparent that the enemy, three dozen strong, is marching in your direction!

The lavish room in which you sit is both grand and grotusque. The ceiling is vaulted to heights even darkvision cannot penetrate, the darkness concealing... what? The walls still have traces of gold in them, the vein mined but not to total extraction. And the decore is something out of a spider's dream, gauzy drapes like webs sway in a light brezze from cracks and crevices. The stuffed remains of a cave bear in on corner and the armor of some ancient race in another look to be caught in the webs as they move to the breeze. An onyx table all one huge block rests in the center with skulls piled in the center, candles atop almost everyone of them casting pale white and yellow light on the mercenaries gathered together.

A dark bearded dwarf wearing an outfit with more pockets than there seems room for, and a thin bladed raiper on his hip. He looks about the room with cool blue eyes.

A hulking, savage brute of fair skin. His massive frame is intimidating even without the extra pair of arms growing out his sides. Normally, his dark brown hair simply hangs about his head, adding to his wild appearance. A light stubble is ever-present on his face. Speaking of his face, it is just as tough-looking as the rest of him… As long, thin scar runs from above his left eye down to the center of his left cheek and a nasty jagged claw mark runs just below his jaw on the right side. And his neck looks like it was bitten by a wolf at some point long ago. His brutish features are generally set in some kind of scowl, and when he snarls or grimaces (as he is wont to do), sharpened (though very clean) teeth are easily visible.

Wearing a suit of finely crafted silvery platemail, which also seems to accommodate his extra limbs. A well-worn pack is slung over his (upper) left shoulder, while heavy gauntlets and thick leather boots adorn his hands and feet. Normally, he would look impressive enough, though not particularly extraordinary. However, the two massive, blue-white glowing arms and vicious looking claws end their hands and his natural hands, which wear smaller, furred gloves of their own. He also sports what looks like a fur shirt over his armor, though it seems to shift and patches appear and disappear. On top of all this, a golden brown cloak of feathers and fur wraps itself around his shoulders and back.

And a drow male whose skin is so dark it seems the shadows are but gray when he is in them. His short stature and thin frame is topped by the traditional ivory white hair. It appears he has no weapon about his person.

All of you have journeyed here for one reason or another.

The whole city is abuzz with talk of The Blot. A blemish on the sky that appeared one day. Many scholars were here already to study artifacts like the Cyphergate that sits in the harbor. Word of The Blot brought many more.

The other big news is that of The Gold Goblin and the "Cheat the Devil and Take his Gold" Tournament. After spending some time closed this event is marking the grand reopening of the gambling hall.

It is the 22 day of Lamashan. It's early afternoon and the busy city goes about its day around you.
